Tune It Up! By: Wendy Lautner
With the summer’s heat blasting full force, a group of women seeking mechanical empowerment ducked into the respite of an air conditioned room at the Village at Northstar for a few hours on Sunday to learn about mountain bike maintenance at a hands-on clinic hosted by the Tahoe LUNA Chix. It was a very busy day for the Chix. Most of us had already participated in our first-ever Donner Lake Triathlon Clinic that morning. Both events were a huge success. At the maintenance clinic Matt kept us hanging on his every word. Our first priority was to learn the anatomy of a bike - pretty simple right? Well, I learned something new - the handlebars are actually connected to a head stem which steers the bike! I know pretty basic right, but there’s always something new to learn. Matt showed us how to change a flat and even provided an opportunity for the girls in the group to get hands-on practice. After the clinic, a group of 7 of us decided it was the perfect time and temperature to hit the trails, so we pedaled up the incline to Northstar’s mid-mountain and then descended down the fun and technical Woods Trail. We all had a hoot! Especially our star Rita! Rita’s relatively new to mountain biking but that didn’t stop her from charging on the technical downhills! Everyone had a blast and a few of the ladies who joined us for that wonderful ride at Northstar showed a couple days later for the Katerina Nash skills clinic, but that’s another story for another blog entry |
