Race Report: Tahoe City Xterra Triathlon - by: Genevieve

With both the Lake Tahoe water and air temperature in the low 50’s combined with 20 mph wind gusts, this year’s Tahoe City Xterra triathlon tested participant’s physical endurance as well as mental capacity to deal with challenging conditions. But that’s Xterra! That’s all part of the fun.

I have to admit as I huddled in the entryway of the bathrooms at Commons Beach seeking shelter from the wind before the race started, I began to wonder, “Why do I do this again?” It wasn’t until my legs warmed up on the bike and my thumb thawed enough to shift gears easily, that I remembered: The challenge of putting three sport disciplines together in one three hour period, the encouraging words from the volunteers, the competitive yet friendly nature of the Xterra regulars and of course swimming, mountain biking and trail running in Tahoe.

Overall, I had a great race and I managed my best time for this course. Typically there are significantly fewer women than men in the Xterra races. But every year, I see more fast women getting into the sport.  Looking forward to my next Xterra Tri in Incline Village. That’s in August. It will be warm then, right?
