I was not athletic growing up. I did not participate in organized sports. My physical activity consisted of gym classes designed to help us pass the Presidential Physical Fitness Test.
Fast forward several years and my good friend convinced me to sign up for Danskin as my first triathlon. I thought, sure no problem. My training consisted of a single swim in Lake Washington, two laps of Greenlake on a rented bike, and no running. I finished the race, and thought it was hard, but I did it!
As few years later I was, **GASP**, turning 30 and felt I needed to make some lifestyle changes so I started working out. I hired a great trainer and she motivated me to do things I had never considered before. She got me excited to try new things. She persuaded me to sign up for my first running race and then another triathlon. I especially loved triathlon because of the multiple disciplines. I never get bored swimming, biking, AND running!!
After I had been doing tris for a couple of years, life threw me a curveball and I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. A life of health and wellness became my #1 priority, and triathlon is the vehicle I use to make that happen. In addition to keeping me moving and physically active, triathlon also brings me happiness in terms of the friendships and community I have built. In my mind, there is no better way to builder stronger bodies and friendships!!

This is my fsecond season with the LUNA Chix and my fifth season of triathlons. I am so excited to be on the team and look forward to meeting new ladies who come to our monthly workouts and training sessions. I enjoy encouraging and supporting women as they strive to meet their personal goals.
I began my triathlon journey triathlon journey 4 years ago with the completion of my first tri in Sept. 2009. I used this tri as a "celebration" of my weight loss of 80 pounds. I began that race with thoughts of, "What the heck am I doing here?" However, as I crossed the finish line with tears of joy, my thoughts instantly transformed to "Yes! I CAN do this and I love it!" I have raced every season since and have not stopped training. I race and train to encourage other women that they too can be a triathlete.
I am also looking forward to our fund-raising endeavors that benefit the Breast Cancer Fund. I have had two very close friends lose their battles with breast cancer. I miss them tremendously and believe that is is so important to bring awareness to breast cancer and the pro-active things we can do to prevent the disease.

I started swimming when I was 8 and fell in love with the sport. I swam at college but stopped after my junior year. I took up running and going to the gym for classes to keep in shape. After about 2 years of doing that I got bored and convinced myself to get back into the water... and of course I fell in love with swimming again.
After spending a year running and swimming I wanted to do more. My husband encouraged me to get a bike since our friends all like to do bike rides through Monroe on the weekend. For my birthday I received an amazing bike (that I love!) and I began riding. Now that I had a bike, and I could run and swim I thought I might as well try a triathlon. After doing the Issaquah sprint tri I was hooked. It became addicting and I looked forward to pushing myself and seeing what I could achieve.
My goals for this season: Stay healthy and do my first Ironman.
I am really excited to be a part of the LUNA Chix program because I love to work-out and meet new women who share the same goals. I look forward to learning new things about how to be a better triathlete, encouraging other women in their adventures, and raising money to support the Breast Cancer Fund!
Races and Events I'm planning on attending in 2012:
- Seattle Rock and Roll Half Marathon (June)
- Chelanman -1/2 ironman (July)
- Ironman Canada (August)

This is my 12th season doing triathlons. I started training for my first local sprint triathlon in Michigan after losing a job, and wanting a goal to work towards each day. I crossed the finish line and knew I was hooked. I have steadily added longer distances and with each year gained more insight, passion and enthusiasm for the sport and all it has to offer.
I was thrilled when Team LUNA Chix invited me to join for the 2013 season, and look forward to becoming an active member of the team. As a regular attendee & occasional volunteer at the Team Luna Chix workouts during 2012, I gained a new sense of enthusiasm for the sport meeting some exceptional women, and helping others in their goals. The Breast Cancer Fund connection means a lot to me too, as my mom and Grandmother were breast cancer survivors.
When I'm not running, biking and swimming, I'm working (pharmaceutical sales), hitting a cross fit strength training class or spending time with my husband & 2 step-daughters.
Years on Team LUNA Chix: In 2012 I was a “mini”, this is my 1st season as a team member!
Favorite Race: I love the ChelanMan race in Washington, but my favorite race to date is the Ironman Texas 70.3 race since I got to race with my brother and sister and have my own extended family cheer section.
Tri Gear I Can't Live Without: Zip Laces!
Best Tri Advice Received: Ditch the wetsuit. Last year at the Chelan Man Olympic distance race, I was having a lot of trouble with wearing a wetsuit. My husband said perhaps I should ditch it all together instead of risking problems in the water. It was my best swim ever.
Favorite LUNA Bar Flavor: Peanut Honey Pretzel
In 2012, I was chosen to blog about my triathlon adventures for the TeamLUNAChix.com website. The Seattle Tri team has been so welcoming to me. The workouts and encouragement are amazing AND there’s no end to the hugs and hi-fives when seeing the LUNA ladies at events. I’m so thrilled to be a part of the team this year along with these inspirational women, and in turn have my own chance to help others who want to achieve their goals.
Many years ago I started long-distance cycling that eventually lead to taking on triathlon. I haven’t turned back. I’ve realized that my body is built for distance, not for speed. When available, I race in the Athena category. One of my mantras is “Rock What You’ve Got!” Run a 12 minute mile? Rock it. Takes you double the time to complete the swim as everyone else? Rock it. Because if I allowed my fear of being “slow” to stop me – I’d be on the couch. And I wouldn’t have any of these amazing memories and friendships that I’m making as I challenge myself with triathlon and cycling.
I've raced at all distances up to 70.3. This year I'm challenging myself with my first full marathon with hopes of doing a full Ironman someday.
Years on Team LUNA Chix: This is my 9th season!
Favorite Race: Whisky Dick
Tri Gear I Can't Live Without: Chamois cream
Best Tri Advice Received: Pace your race. Be patient, don't start out too fast or you will fade at the end.
Favorite LUNA Bar Flavor: Chocolate Dipped Coconut
This is my 13th season doing triathlons. I started with Danskin in 1999 and fell in love with the sport! I love that triathlons are you racing against yourself - getting faster and having fun! I enjoy the challenge of racing sprint to half ironman distances. Because of knee issues, my goals have changed. No longer do I want to go as fast as I can, train as much as I can, and kill myself in the process. Now I want to get strong, stay fit, keep the body healthy, and have fun!
I've been involved with Team LUNA Chix since it started 9 years ago, both on the local and national level. I love being a part of the program because of the fantastic and inspirational women I've met! I'm happy helping women in their quest for success - answering questions on training for a first tri, gaining comfort in the open water, learning bike mechanics, or just getting out there! The Breast Cancer Fund connection means a lot to me too, as my mom's a breast cancer survivor.
When I'm not running, biking and swimming I'm strength training, doing Pilates, gardening, cooking, and taking care of my three(!) pugs Henry, Tugger and Pebbles.

Years on Team LUNA Chix: This is my 5th season
Favorite Race: Beaver Lake Sprint, Hawaii 70.3, Ironman Canada
Tri Gear I Can't Live Without: Garmin and Powertap (data, data, lovely data!)
Best Tri Advice Received: Be present and soak up every moment during races because you deserve the reward of the entire experience leading up to and past the finish line.
Favorite LUNA Bar Flavor: Chocolate Dipped Coconut
As I write this bio, I am reminded of what draws me to Team LUNA Chix Seattle Triathlon...it's the people I come in contact with and the opportunity to help others explore the possibilities and share experiences together through the wonderful sport of triathlon. We're all part of the same multisport family, and when we can be more active and healthier together, well, that just gives me goosebumps!
I remember my first year in triathlon (2005) and attending a Team LUNA Chix Wetsuit Clinic before Seafair. I did not know the first thing about a wetsuit or if it was zipped in the front or back! No question was left unanswered and every participant received the attention and support to prepare for that next event.
I look forward to meeting you, training and learning together. Please reach out to say hello if we have not met yet and I will do the same. It's going to be a great season and I will do my part to keep it fun, educational and also unexpected for what we will experience and achieve over the next year. See you at a future LUNA event!
Races and Events I'm planning on attending in 2013:
Mercer Island Half Marathon

Years on Team LUNA Chix: This is my first season!

Best Tri Advice Received: The swim is the shortest leg of the race. Just get through it and make up time in the bike and run.
Favorite LUNA Bar Flavor: Chocolate Dipped Coconut
I am relatively new to this sport of triathalon. I was approaching a millestone birthday a few years back and in a rut. Something needed to change. My daughter was in high school and finally I had some time for myself! A friend suggested we do the Danskin Tri. Somehow we stumbled upon the Luna Chix and ever since then they have been my "go to gals" for advice, support, encouragement and fun! This is my 4th season doing triathalons and I also started running half-marathons which I really love. I am so excited to a part of this amazing team! Being surrounded by a community of women that see no obstacles to the next challenge is very empowering. I hope to inspire other women to get out there and do something they never thought they could do and have fun in the process. The bonus with this gig is the opportunity to really get involved with the Breast Cancer Fund as we have all been touched by this disease.
My other interests are reading and socializing with my 2 bookclubs. Spending time with my daughter, who will be heading off to college in the fall, and spending time with a variety of furry and feathered family members.
