San Diego Cycle TEAM

What’s a LUNA to do? As a LUNA cycling team, we have two main objectives – to raise money for the Breast Cancer Fund and to promote beginning women’s cycling in the San Diego community. Sounds pretty simple, right? Think again. How do you promote something to people you don’t know who DON’T do that something? A little like trying to prove a negative. You can’t just stand on the street corner and accost everyone who is NOT on a bicycle. Go into Starbucks and call out, “hey, any of you women not ride a bike but want to?” Maybe not. Yes, we liberally sprinkle our business cards to all the local bike shops. But if you’re not a cyclist, realistically how often do you go into a bike shop?

Going for some out-of-the-box thinking, we realized that, while WE might not know the women we are trying to reach, SOMEONE does. Wait! Light bulb! What about all those guys we see every weekend flying up the road and trying to put the hurt on one another? A lot of them have wives. Or girlfriends. Or some other variant of partner. Or they want wives. Or girlfriends. Or both. Wouldn’t they love it if their womenfolk got into cycling…..with someone besides them? The women would get increased fitness and maybe the guys would get more of a free pass to spend weekends bonding with their spandex peeps instead of unsticking the door or mulching the flower beds.

To test our hypothesis, we approached one of our local ultra-macho racing teams, Swamis (http://www.swamis.org/), about producing a women’s ride in conjunction with one of their regular weekend rides. Same starting place, a bit later roll time, 25 miles or so, entry-level pace. They thought it was a FABULOUS idea. So our first inaugural Chix of Swamis ride will meet at 8 a.m. on Saturday April 28, 2012 at Nytro Multisport, 940 S. Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas, CA 92024 (here’s a Google map link: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=940+S.+Coast+Hwy+101+encinitas+ca&hl=en&sll=37.0625,95.677068&sspn=37.273371,74.970703&hnear=940+S+Coast+Highway+101,+Encinitas,+San+Diego,+California+92024&t=m&z=16) and roll at 8:30, well after the Swamis groups have taken off.

Come join us!
