Nutrition for Female Cyclists

Our July fundraising event was a big success!  Franca Alphin, Sports Dietitian and Director of Nutrition Services at Duke University Student Health, spoke to a group of 15-20 female cyclists at the UNC Wellness Center.  She stressed the importance of hydration, especially during the heat wave we’re experiencing this month!

Fluids help with temperature regulation, and inadequate fluid intake can cause fatigue and confusion.  She gave the following guidelines for fluid consumption: 10-16 C (Cups). a day; increase fluid intake by 2-6 C. a few days before a cycling event; 3 hours prior, drink 2 C. (approximately 20 oz.); 2 hours prior, drink an additional 2 C.; 1 hour before the event, drink another 2 C.; during the activity, drink 1/2 C. every 15-20 minutes; after the event, consume 3 C. of fluid for every one pound lost during the event.

Be safe and stay hydrated this summer!
