Catharine Pendrel and Katerina Nash Dominate at Mt. Snow
Mt. Snow is one of the favorite stops on the Pro Tour because of its demanding courses, well organized races, and huge crowds that show up for three days of action packed racing. The LUNA Team has always done well here, and this past weekend was no exception. The women's cross country race was on Saturday. While only 30 riders started, five of the top ten riders had recently placed top ten in the previous world cup. Katerina Nash led up the first climb, only to be derailed from a flat tire just past the first tech zone. Catharine Pendrel took over and with her superior climbing ability, dropped the entire field. She went on to ride alone, finishing over 1 1/2 minutes ahead of Willow Koerber (Gary Fisher/Subaru). Georgia Gould was 4th, Katerina battled back to an impressive 7th, and Chloe Forsman finished in 9th, her best cross country finish in many years.
On Sunday, the riders raced on a new short track course. The new course had a lot more climbing, which suited the LUNA riders nicely. Catharine attacked on the third lap and got a comfortable gap, but then crashed hard close to the start/finish area. Katerina had lady luck on her side today and took over the lead, dropping the remaining riders, and soloed to her first short track victory of the season. Georgia was 4th, Chloe 8th, and Catharine finished 13th.
In the overall XC standings, Catharine is in first with Georgia right behind in 2nd. In the STXC, Katerina sits in 2nd, Georgia in 3rd and Catharine in 4th. The girls are first in the women's team classification. Next weekend at Windham Mountain, NY, is the Pro Tour XCT Finals so look for the team to ride aggressively in pursuit of the cross country and short track overall titles.
