With a stacked women’s field, all eyes were on the LUNA duo of Katerina and Georgia and defending US champion Katie Compton. With Katie and Georgia having recently raced in the UCI MTB World Championships and Katerina fresh from her time at home, it was anyone’s race. The blistering pace set by Brit Helen Wyman (Kona) created the first separation. Katie and Katerina were the only riders that could counter. Soon it was the two of them riding together with Wyman fading in third, and Georgia chasing in 4th. An unfortunate crash after the run-up took Katerina out of contention for the win. Katie soloed the rest of the race, winning by almost a minute over Katerina. Georgia had a tight battle with Kelli Emmett (Giant Bicycles) but powered away on the last lap for 3rd. A great start to the cross season! Noteably absent was Alison Dunlap, stuck at home fighting a nasty sinus cold. She’ll join the team for the first round of the US Gran Prix in Madison, WI this weekend. Stay tuned!
