Austin Luna Chix sponsor Waco women’s mtb clinic.
Ride Cameron Park celebrated its 5th year this November and we were happy to have Shonny return again with her whole team of Austin Luna Chix in tow. The weather was beautiful, a crisp fall morning with the color of orange and yellow leaves sprinkling the trails.
The aroma of coffee passed through the expo area as the ladies prepared for the morning’s activities. Women’s specific design bikes from Trek and Specialized were available for the ladies to borrow for the day, and many went home with “new sweet bike” added to their Christmas list.
Women of all ages and riding backgrounds attended the event and were separated into groups based on their riding ability. Each group attended hour long sessions covering turning, trail riding, bike mechanics, obstacle course, and bike handling skills. It was a neat experience to see everyone progress as the day unfolded. One of our youngest riders Allison, 11 years, thoroughly enjoyed her turning lesson from Shonny on the windy Rinky Dink Trail. “I love this trail, can we do it again pleeeease?”
Shonny did a candid interview as the ladies feasted on fajitas during lunch and learned all her secrets like snacking on Slim Jims and growing extra caffeinated coffee beans to race fast. The Luna Chix gave away some awesome swag in raffles throughout the day and I even walked away with a sweet visor.
The afternoon and evening activities included a stretching and core session, group ride, dinner, and a viewing of “Off Road to Athens” under the stars. Some ladies camped and dressed in costumes as they shared stories from the day’s adventures. The next morning was a group ride to explore the 20+ miles of trails in Cameron Park and practice newly acquired handling skills.
A huge thank you goes to all the volunteers of the Waco Bike Club, Austin Luna Chix, El Siete Mares Restaurant, Bicycles Outback and City of Waco Parks and Recreation Department. This event is only possible because of all our great volunteers and sponsors.
The highlight of the entire experience was when I received an email from Allison’s dad saying that she was inspired by the clinic and despite having a recent crash on her bike, had popped right back up without any tears and tried the section again. Think we may have recruited a real mountain biking girl!
