Trail Building, BBQ & Ride Event at Luther Forest - report by Madeleine Bonneville
Armed with rakes, clippers and Tracy’s rather impressive machete (and pockets full of Luna minis of course!), volunteers hit the woods a little after 10am after a quick briefing from the trail designers, John and Stacy. Dividing into two groups, everyone pitched in with enthusiasm and in surprisingly little time, three new sections of trail were cleared, adding a total of approximately a mile to the existing rideable area!
Reuniting back at the parking lot, the group found our fearless leader, Theresa, had the grill fired up and her truck’s tailgate down and covered with an impressive spread (including Tracy’s fabulous quinoa salad, one of the biggest hits at the BBQ!). After a good morning’s work, everyone enjoyed refueling and the food disappeared in no time flat!
Once everyone had eaten their fill, the group broke out the mountain bikes, eager to help break in the new trails. Though the new sections will need to be ridden over a couple of times to settle in, everyone realized quickly how much progress we had made in one short morning! Having tested the new sections, the group decided to split into two rides to explore the rest of the trails.
With challenges for beginner riders and experts alike, the Luther Forest Trails gave everyone countless chances to test their skills. Whether a rider was learning how to descend and climb comfortably or challenging proficiency on a number of obstacles including teeter-totters, single board ramps, and bridges, everyone enjoyed cheering on their fellow riders’ successes. The whoops and happy hollers of encouragement could be heard from miles around!
Giving our time to improving the local trails was a great way to kick off the season! We are very grateful to everyone who took the time to come out and help and we look forward to riding with everyone again soon!!!
