Barb has always liked biking, but never owned a road bike until two years ago. Prompted by her daughter Luisa's success in triathlons and several Ironman races, she decided to learn how to "ride the pavement".The exhilaration she has experienced has converted her to an avid biker! Finding The Orange Shoe Gym and Luna Chix booths at the Wellness Fair prompted her to join the Luna Chix bike rides this past year. It has been a great learning experience and a lot of fun! The "chix" are a fantastic group of women! Barb and her husband, Dave have three girls, all in their twenties-Luisa, Martha, and Katie.
Carrie was introduced to cycling through her husband. Initially she started with mounatin biking, but at the time, she was timid out on the trails - which only makes for a more difficult time! She decided to try road riding instead. Once she had her own road bike, she discovered the love of riding. "I love the sights I see when I'm out riding. I take note of wildlife, and what crops are growing (can you tell I ride in the country!) I also love the feeling of just being outside and doing something active. It makes me feel better mentally and physcially. LUNA Chix gives me the opprotunity to share this love of riding with others." Carrie lives Madison with her husband Paul, a dog named Russell and Awaja, her cat.
Deanna's favorite childhood possession was her lime green banana seat bicycle. The only girl in a country neighborhood full of boys, that bike allowed her to be "one of the guys" during rousing games of "smash 'em up derby" and "cops and robbers." She's come a long way since then. One thing that hasn't changed is the feeling of power, joy and freedom she gets from hopping on her bike and going for a spin. As a member of the Madison LUNA Chix Cycling Team, she hopes to share that feeling with other women of Madison.
Nowadays, Deanna uses her bike to train for triathlons and commute to her job with the University of Wisconsin-Extension, Cooperative Extension, where she plays with computers all day.
When she's not on her bike, Deanna enjoys spending time with her family, cooking up gluten and dairy free goodies, and spending far too much time playing with social media.
Diane LOVES cycling. It is her favorite sport. And she plays a lot of sports. These include swimming, running, tennis, and skiing . But cycling is the most fun. "When I'm cycling, I feel strong, confident and free. It's a great feeling!" After being an East Coast girl for all of her life, Diane moved to Madison in the summer of 2006. One of the best things about her adopted home town is the beautiful roads to ride on and the scenic country side that make the miles go by effortlessly. Diane completed her first Ironman triathlon in September 2012 and qualified to race in Kona in October 2013. Diane and her husband, Kurt, also enjoy an active home life with their three kids - Brandon (16), Victoria (14) and Blaise (9).
Diane is honored to be part of the LUNA Chix Madison Cycling Team. She's looking forward to getting other women involved in the sport she loves as well as raising money for the Breast Cancer Fund and local Madison charities.
Karen has been cycling since around the year 2000. "I always enjoyed athletics growing up. I realized that I needed exercise in my life to help relieve stress. I love the feeling of accomplishment after a long bike ride." Karen enjoys helping motivate people to be athletic and achieve goals that they have their sights set on. While not cycling or running, she enjoys spending time with her husband Chad and their two dogs Owen and Dewey and their cat Moose.
I came to Madison in 1998 to go to college and never left! I love that in a few short miles, you can be out on a country road, enjoying all that Dane County has to offer. I've been riding with the Luna Chix for three years, but this is my first year as one of the leaders. I'm looking forward to another great season with the Luna Chix! I participated in my first sprint distance triathlon last year and am going to try my luck at an Olympic distance tri this fall. When I'm not running, biking, or swimming, you can find me out in the field working with my two dogs. These two hobbies are enough to keep me busy most nights of the week!
I met my husband at the Univ. of Wisconsin and we never left Madison; we have been married for nearly 22 years and enjoy many of the same activities. One of those activities is biking, which is great in Madison! We don't have any kids or pets (makes it easier for the traveling), but we spoil our nieces and nephew!
Peg moved to Madison in 1991 and spent her first summers exploring the many rails-to-trails bicycling opportunities throughout the state. She switched to road cycling in Spring 2000 after realizing that the 2-day, 150-mile ride from Milwaukee to Door County (a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) that she’d signed up for on a lark in the dead of winter would require some preparation. In 2001, she followed up with the Minneapolis to Chicago AIDSRide and has enjoyed riding the many scenic routes in and around the Madison area ever since. In addition to cycling, Peg enjoys backpacking, running, reading and word puzzles as well as accumulating frequent flyer miles to support her travel habits. She is delighted to be part of Madison LUNA Chix and looks forward to sharing the sport, and the mission to fight breast cancer, with others.
Robin is excited to be joining Madison's Team Luna Chix for the 2013 cycling season! She has ridden with the group for two previous summers, and recently found cycling as a new love after spending many years on the sidelines cheering on her husband, Andy, in his efforts through mountain, road, and now cyclocross racing. After finally diving in three years ago, she also challenged herself to participate in several triathlons, a few running races and this past year, three cyclocross races of her own (things she never would have seen herself doing!). Robin spends her days as a Physician Assistant in Orthopedic Trauma, her nights hanging out with family (including her little boy Calvin) and biding her time until the fall arrival of their second son. Last fall, Robin lost a co-worker to breast cancer, and feels honored to be riding with a team that supports great causes close to her. She looks forward to helping women to feel empowered and stay active through all phases of their lives!
When Stephanie Skladzien completed her first triathlon at age 9, she was nearly convinced that her multisport stint would be short-lived. Through many years of competitive swimming, running, recreational bike rides, and a whole lot of family encouragement, she developed a love for athletics that has not let up since. Of the events in triathlon, cycling has become Stephanie's favorite. Whether she's commuting to work, cranking out a long training ride, or running (riding?) errands on her bike, Stephanie enjoys exploring the many safe and scenic routes in the Madison area. When not in the saddle, she keeps busy with baking, crafts, and planning her next athletic endeavor.
Stephanie is passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles and fitness throughout the community. She enjoys being able to see athletes of all abilities discover the sport and improve their riding skills. Stephanie is excited to be a part of the Madison LUNA Chix in their fourth year, and looks forward to sharing her love and knowledge of cycling with others!
