LUNA Chix 2nd Ride of the Season - 4/17/12
Yesterday was our 2nd ride of the Season and we’re off to a wonderful start. We had 7 LUNA Chix and 11 participants on the ride from Pasadena Cyclery. It was so nice to see some familiar faces from last season along with new riders. We began the ride by going over safety rules (i.e. hand signals, traffic laws, etc.) before Deb went over the Breast Cancer Fund and then passed out Luna bars. We were so excited to inform our participants that Alison Dunlap (retired professional cyclist, two-time Olympian, former World Champion, and former National Champion) will host a LUNA pro clinic on July 21. As a team, we had the opportunity to meet her at Summit and she is just amazing. Not only did she give us wonderful tips on cycling which we will share with our participants but she inspired all of us to just get out there and “pedal.” Next I went over the route and explained this was a no-drop ride. In the beginning of the season we are going to start out with short rides, and work our way up to longer distances with some climbing. We started out as one large group but as the ride continued, it was evident that we had two different levels of riders. We decided to break into two groups which gave us the opportunity to work with the participants. In particular, we had a new rider who was afraid of changing gears but once we went over basics she felt comfortable in trying it out. She was so grateful because she had been riding this whole time only using one gear. It was a gorgeous day to be out riding and the participants were so excited by our weekly rides. They said this was an opportunity to improve their biking skills along with holding them accountable to just be on their bikes. We rode approximately 12 miles with an average speed of 10-14 mph to the city of Sierra Madre and back. Come out and invite new friends to join our rides as we encourage and motivate each other. We focus on riding safely and riding smarter, not harder. COMMENTS |
