I found the attached New York Times article interesting on several levels.  We’ve all heard that diet alone will not result in sustained weight lose, but it also appears that exercise alone may result in little to no weight loss, even if the exercise is intense.  BUT sustained exercise does play a pivotal role in keeping weight off for the long term.  The article also explains why weight loss is often so much harder for women then it is for men Bottom line:  Don’t rely solely on exercise to lose weight - but don’t expect keep weight off unless you combine a sensible, nutritious diet with expertise.  All the more reason to “Get out and play”!

Sunday was my first run since the Reston Sprint Tri on May 31st last year. I went 3.5 miles in the cold rain and it was definitely a humbling experience. A high risk pregnancy + 10 weeks of 24/7 bedrest + c-section + infant twins = a much slower Heather. But, I was proud of myself for sticking to a plan to run the Columbia Triathlon at the end of May and enjoying the fact that I can run again.

I started swimming again after taking several months off. Some people can swim everyday all year long. Others force themselves to swim just enough to ensure they won’t drown during the swim portion of their next triathlon. Like baby bear, I find swimming from mid-March to mid-September to be “just right”. When I start up in March, it feels fresh and new and by October I am at my strongest for the last big race.

The Watchung Trail Marathon confirmed my notion that low key races are the best kind of races for me.  I like races that don’t require a ton of effort just getting to get to the start line.  The best races offer quick registrations with no lines, no chips, no bibs, no t-shirts and a guy at the start line who yells, “Set, Go!”
