On May 20th each year, cyclists across the globe gather to ride in silence to honor those fallen on our roadways. I experienced my first Ride of Silence as I joined in with hundreds of Tucson cyclists this evening in a 9-mile loop around the city. The ride was quiet in pace and mood, and even peaceful. It was pretty wonderful to have a group of a few hundred cyclists just pedaling down the road. No rush. The stress of Tucson’s traffic, 6-lane arterial roadways, horns, and blistering heat somehow disappeared. I joined the event straight from my internship, and pedaled the few miles on my townie bike in my work clothes. No stress of getting ‘kitted’ up for a ride.
In honor of the Ride of Silence; ride defensively, ride smart, and wear your helmet.
I’m not sure how smart it was to take pictures while riding, buy hey, I needed blog content. Enjoy.
