Buffalo LUNA Chix Will Run for Cupcakes!

As a relatively new member of Buffalo’s Team Luna Chix, I recently participated in my first “Cupcake Run.”  I have been hearing about how much fun the Cupcake Run is ever since I joined the team, but now I can say from personal experience that running can be even more fun when you bring cupcakes into the mix! (Thanks go out to the Madison Team LUNA Chix Cycling team for starting this great trend with their own ‘Cupcake Ride’ a few seasons ago.)

I have to admit I was slightly skeptical at first since the run was pretty early on a Saturday morning and a bit of a drive for us “city dwellers.”  Luckily I was able to carpool with a fellow team member, and as much as I love to sleep in on Saturdays, the destination, the cause, the team, and the cupcakes made it totally worthwhile!

The festivities began on a gorgeous day on Main Street at the Sweet Sixteen Café in Lockport, New York – named for the downtown “Locks” on the Erie Barge Canal.  There, we were welcomed by the café owners and their staff who were earnestly preparing many cupcakes for our runners to take home as treats after the race.  Everyone participating in the run — about 30 women of all ages — seemed genuinely excited to be there.

Soon after we all arrived, and right on time, we started the run, a 3 or 5 mile route along the historic Erie Canal.  We were greeted throughout the run by colorful signs and sidewalk messages marking the route along the path and containing motivational notes such as “This Way to Cupcakes.”

The scenery alone would have been enough to make me happy on a beautiful morning run, but the experience was made even better by the company and conversations that I had with other runners during the event.  The miles flew by and before I knew it, I was making my way up the huge incline along the elevated Locks at the end of the course (not without cheering, of course!) and picking out my cupcake at the Sweet Sixteen Café.

After the run, we gathered in the cupcake shop and raffled off donations and prizes from local businesses and some that were representative of LUNA and the Breast Cancer Fund: like microwave safer glass leftover dishes and BPA free stainless steel water bottles.  We congratulated runners who had accomplished personal goals, such as running the longest they had ever run, or making it up the entire hill without walking.  The Buffalo LUNA Chix team would like to thank our participants and generous sponsors for helping us raise over $400 for the Breast Cancer Fund!  Saturday’s Cupcake Run was a huge success, and tons of fun and delicious cupcakes were had by all!
