Two Simple Truths

When I eat bad, I feel bad.  When I don’t move much, I don’t feel like moving much.  Is it really that simple?  With all the diets, exercises, rules, stats, charts and plans out there, does living a healthy, active lifestyle really boil down to 2 things: eating well and moving a lot?  Personally, I believe so.  Yes, there are a gazillion other factors but if you strip away all the details, if you just put your energy toward eating healthfully and being physically active, I promise you’ll have more energy.  And that energy will drive you to be even MORE active.  And when you’re active, you will see and feel things happen to your body - really great things - that will make you want to eat well to keep the positive momentum going.  As a dear friend says, “A body in motion stays in motion” - wait, didn’t someone else say that too?  I firmly believe it.  I’m living proof.

I really do think that as a society, we put WAY too much emphasis on whatever is hot at the moment when it comes to what we put in our bellies and what we do with our bodies.  Remember the Atkins Diet?  Yeah, I tried it and lasted about 2 days.  The South Beach Diet?  I knew better than to try that one, for fear of becoming a raging crazy woman.  How about the ab roller, how many of you ordered that little doozie by calling 1-800-U-R-A-SUCKER?  Me - I did.  I also, over the years, joined gym after gym with a super exceptional low promotional rate and the promise of super exceptional classes that would have me looking like a supermodel, but usually dropped the membership within a year.  I tried and failed, tried and failed, until one day I decided to finally - the “I’m putting my foot down!” kind of finally - make a commitment to living a healthy and active lifestyle. The crazy thing?  It didn’t require any equipment, nor expensive supplements, nor a highly restrictive diet.  It required time and dedication and persistence.  And it got easier with time.  It’s still getting easier.  Well, the workouts are getting harder but the mindset is getting easier.

Try it. I dare you.  Try living by the mantra of “eat healthy, move more” (I like that better than “eat less, move more”) and see where it gets you.  My guess is into a smaller pair of jeans and a better frame of mind.
